Medical Humanities is a growing field with diverse constituent disciplines (humanities, social sciences, and visual and performing arts) and of increasing interest to both liberal arts and health campuses. The need for these perspectives has become more apparent than ever during our current global COVID-19 crisis.
Medical Humanities Core Courses MH 1331 Introduction to Medical Humanities Introduction to the interdisciplinary and wide-ranging field of medical humanities, its subjects and scope, and the way in which it can expand and enrich the experiences of patients and practitioners. PHI 1309 Introduction to Medical Ethics The Medical Humanities Certificate provides students with an understanding of how human experience, medical practice, and scientific technology intersect. Using an interdisciplinary approach, the program emphasizes how bioscience and health care take place within specific cultural and social contexts. Medical Humanities is an interdisciplinary field that explores, from multiple perspectives, connections between humans, cultures, medicine and allied health sciences. Medical Humanities complements the Health Sciences, and encompasses the Humanities, Social Sciences and the Arts. Based at the School of Medicine, the Council is an advocate for the medical humanities and the arts, encouraging and coordinating rigorous scholarship in these areas, including medical student research. The mission of the Department of Humanities is to advance humanism in medicine and society.
